Thick, lush, dark lashes can enhance anyone’s looks. Unfortunately, most people are not born with lashes like that. Mascara can darken and thicken lashes, but it can also make the shortness and sparseness of lashes more apparent, plus it can run and smear. Many women turn to lash extensions, but they can cause eye infections, eyelid irritation, and fall off at the most embarrassing of times. However, with Latisse®, you can grow your own natural thick, lush lashes.
What is Latisse®?
Latisse® comes as a liquid solution. The usual procedure is that once a day, either in the morning or evening, after cleansing the face and eyelids, a tiny drop of Latisse® is placed on the disposable applicator. Then the applicator is used to carefully apply the solution to the upper eyelids at the base of the eyelashes. Blinking will transfer the solution to the lower eyelids.
Since it acts by stimulating hair growth, the effects are not apparent immediately. Most users notice a difference in the weeks after beginning applications, but the full effect takes 16 weeks to achieve. If Latisse® is discontinued, the eyelashes will gradually revert to their former appearance.
How Does It Work?
Latisse® was first developed for treating glaucoma, and it is still being sold as a treatment for glaucoma under a different name. The researchers were surprised to notice that their patients were growing long, lush eyelashes as a side effect. Eyelashes, like any other hair, grow out of hair follicles. Each hair follicle goes through regular cycles of growing a hair, then shedding the hair and entering a resting phase before beginning to grow a new hair. Latisse® acts by prolonging the growth phase. Thus, the follicle grows a longer eyelash before shedding it, and since more hair follicles are growing eyelashes at any one time, the eyelashes become thicker.
